Today, our lives seem all too commonplace. With the possible exception of royalty, pop stars and footballers, most of us conform to a more or less ordinary life. This has not always been the case. A few generations ago, England had many larger-than-life characters both good and bad, who were mostly treated with indulgence and a wry smile.

Suffolk author, Harold Mills West, has gathered a gallery of East Anglian eccentrics and has written their story. His book includes a highwayman and a literary parson from Norfolk; a heroine, a miser, and a smuggler from Suffolk; a hermit and a wizard from Essex; and a super-fraudster and a compulsive poet from Cambridgeshire.

Harold Mills West grew up in Suffolk and remained there all his life. He was a born storyteller and wrote many successful books including Suffolk Villages, Ghosts of East Anglia, East Anglia Tales of Mystery & Murder and Suffolk Country Schooldays.

This book was first published in 1986 under the title, Colourful Characters of East Anglia.
