IPSWICH - THE WAR YEARS By David Kindred

Events throughout the 1930s and 40s have made an indelible mark on our society. The Second World War affected the lives of all those who were growing up during this turbulent period in world history. Ipswich, an area that occupied an important strategic position was therefore especially prone to attacks from the Luftwaffe and had more than its fair share of tragic events. Memories of air raids that hit Ipswich time and time again are still as vivid and colourful today as they were then.

This book is a collection of some of the best articles that have been featured in David Kindred's popular "Kindred Spirits" columm, in the award-winning Evening Star. The thoughts, feelings and memories of numerous Ipswich residents are recounted with the use of some wonderful photography and personal memories of events.

David Kindred is a well-known name to those in the area. His Monday column in the Evening Star has provoked thought and feelings within the community for many years.

The 1950s and '60s was a time of huge change for Ipswich. Many parts of the old town were demolished in the name of modernisation with new housing, office buildings and a new road network being built. The cherished trolley buses were taken out of service during this time, as were the great steam trains that used to transport locals to nearby seaside towns for days out and summer holidays.

The music and dance scene was also developing at a fast pace; ballroom dancing gave way to the arrival of rock and roll in the early 60s, with hundreds of local teenagers gathering each weekend at the town's halls and studios to dance to records by bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

David Kindred brings to life the changing face of Ipswich in the '50s and '60s in this book, using his own collection of outstanding vintage photography, as well as images from the archives of The Evening Star and those donated by local residents.
